Many traffic lights in Wisconsin were recently switched to use LED lights instead of the traditional incandescent. The LED lights have the major benefit of using less energy, which would save cities and the state hundreds of thousands of dollars a year with their use.
This switch to the energy efficient LED lights has recently caused several problems to show. Because the lights are extremely energy efficient, snow and ice are beginning to build up on traffic signals. This problem never occurred with the less efficient lights because of the amount of heat given off would melt any snow or ice. City and state officials are now working in an effort to solve this problem to help reduce the possibility of traffic accidents occurring because the traffic lights were not seen by drivers.
