Defroster Problems

Defrosters are a useful and sometimes essential vehicle system to help with visibility in cold, wet conditions. When the air temperature is low and humidity is high, car windows have a tendency to collect moisture and fog up. This can make it extremely difficult to see the road and vehicles around you.

If you are driving in high speed traffic, you may not be able to pull over to wipe down your windows, and even if you can, this will only temporarily fix the problem. Within a few minutes you will once again have foggy windows and will be at risk of having a costly accident caused by limited visibility.

Defroster Malfunctions

There are a few different parts to the defroster system that allow it to function properly. If any one part malfunctions, the windows may not be properly cleared and your visibility will be compromised. Some of the possible malfunctions that can occur include the following:

  • Air conditioner is not working: Prevents the air from being dehumidified
  • Fan blower fails: Air will not blow out of the defroster and onto the windows
  • Defroster door is clogged or stuck shut: Air cannot be ventilated to the defroster vents
  • Defroster ducts are not properly sealed: Air will leak out of the system and not reach the vents

If your defroster is malfunctioning, your windows may fog up while driving and you may not be able to operate your car safely. Your car or part manufacturer may be responsible for an accident that is caused by a defroster malfunction. If you have been in an accident caused by an inoperative defroster, consider consulting with a car accident attorney to determine if you have grounds to pursue a lawsuit for compensation.
