A 21-year-old woman who was seriously injured in a biking accident in 2008 organized Wausau’s first ever “Critical Mass” bike ride last Thursday, in which 40 cyclists rode together to raise awareness of bicyclists and the need for heightened safety standards.
The woman was stuck when she was crossing the Grand Avenue-Thomas Street intersection on her bike last year. Currently, the city’s ordinance requires cyclists to stay on the sidewalk along Grand Avenue, which bike riders say is more dangerous than riding on the road, since drivers are not aware of cyclists as they approach the intersection.
