This holiday season, the Wausau Family Resource Center will be participating in the United Way Bundles of Joy program. This program raises money to purchase formula and diapers for strained families.

This year, the organization has hopes to raise $10,000 to put towards the effort and has already helped 1,000 families with extra funds from last year’s drive. A grant set up through the B.A. & Esther Greenheck Foundation will match donations totaling up to $5,000. Any and all donations are gladly accepted to contribute to this helpful organization.

The Wausau Center will double as a gift wrapping center where individuals can volunteer to wrap the formula and diapers to distribute during the month of December. The center is made up completely of volunteers who are eager to contribute to this great cause.

Three injured in Wisconsin car accident

A Glenbeulah man is accused of drunk driving for the fourth time after he caused a car accident that injured himself as well as two others.

The 46-year-old man was driving Monday after ingesting beer throughout the entire day when he failed to stop at a stop sign near Highway 23 and struck the back of another vehicle. The driver of the stopped vehicle and his passenger were both injured during the accident. The drunk driver was also hurt during the crash and all three of the individuals were taken to the Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.

The drunk driving charge that was given to the man will be his fourth charge relating to that topic. He is currently still facing sentencing dealing with his arrest on August 9 for drunk driving as well.

Police officer injured in Wausau collision

A Wausau police officer was injured Thanksgiving night after his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver. Alcohol could be smelt on the man when officers approached his vehicle.

The intoxicated driver, a 37-year-old Wausau man, fled from his vehicle once the officer questioning him went to check on the injured officer. He decided to turn himself into officials and was charged with his sixth offense of drinking and driving. The police officer was not severely injured but his patrol car was damaged to the point that it was inoperable.

In the last month there have been two accidents in Wausau that have involved a police officer’s car.

Man arrested on fifth DWI charge

A 54-year-old Wisconsin man has been arrested on charges stemming from his fifth DWI.

The man was driving in the town of Wilson in a GMC Yukon. He was pulling up to a stop sign when he hit the back of a Toyota Prius that was stopped in front of him. When police arrived on the scene they immediately detected alcohol on the man’s breath and he was subsequently arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

This charge will be the man’s fifth offense regarding drinking and driving. The driver of the Prius was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

One texting citation issued in Wausau

The texting while driving ban that was enacted December 1,2010 in the state of Wisconsin has been hard for police officers to enforce.

Wausau police have only issued one texting citation during the past year. Police are not surprised by this low number because they say it is difficult to determine if a driver is texting on their phone.

The Wausau citation came after the driver rear-ended a patrol car and admitted to the police he had been distracted by a text message on his cell phone. The police officer wasn’t injured in the accident.

Two killed in head-on collision

A woman driving the wrong way on I-94 this weekend in Pewaukee crashed into an oncoming vehicle, killing the driver and herself.

Multiple people who saw the woman traveling the wrong way alerted authorities. Four police cars were sent to the scene and as one car was approaching the driver, she hit another car head-on. The woman was killed instantly as well as the other driver, a 41-year-old Wisconsin man.

The widow of the victim said she is truly heartbroken to learn of her husband’s passing and realizes that her life and the lives of her three children will be forever changed. She just wants answers as to how this accident happened. Police have made a statement saying that although it was a tragic accident it could have been even worse.

Police are currently still investigating the causes of the deadly car accident.

Pedestrian accidents a concern this Halloween

The likelihood of a pedestrian accident happening is higher at night. This Halloween children will be occupying neighborhood streets in the dark. Drivers and pedestrians need to be alert when they are out.

Dangerous areas for both drivers and pedestrians include crosswalks and dark corners of the street. Drivers need to come to a complete stop at crosswalks and need to expect that some children will not follow proper etiquette when crossing the street. They need to not drive as fast and not be on their cell phones at all while driving.

Pedestrians need to stay out of the main street while trick-or-treating as well as stay in parts of the neighborhood where they will be visible to cars.Parents should equip their children in safe costumes as well.

First month for teen drivers most hazardous

Numerous studies reveal that the first month teen drivers are legally allowed to be on the roads alone is the most dangerous month for them to drive.

It is suggested that parents stay engaged even after the teenagers are out of the learner’s permit stage. According to research, teenagers are twice as likely to crash their motor vehicle in the first month than they are in the following two years of operating a motor vehicle.

The person occupying the passenger seat of the teenager’s vehicle changes significantly after the learner’s permit is traded in for a valid driver’s license. After a driver’s license is obtained, parents are only recorded in the car 3 percent of the time. The rest of the time is made up of fellow teenagers and younger siblings in the passenger seat. This statistic is a large reason why teenagers are 50 times more likely to crash their car in the first month.

Wausau passenger dies in car accident

This Sunday afternoon a car accident occurred leaving a 25-year-old Wausa man as the only casualty.

The driver of the motor vehicle was traveling west on Highway 11 when it suddenly crossed into the eastbound lane striking a semi-truck. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured in the accident.

The 25-year-old Wausau passenger died at the site of the car accident. The driver of the vehicle was taken to a hospital by flight where their condition is unknown at this time.

An ongoing investigation of this fatal accident is currently underway.

Car accident sends four to hospital

A horse-drawn buggy carrying four Amish children to school was struck by an oncoming car during the early hours of the morning on Barry Road in the town of Marcellon.

The car hit the buggy as it was leaving a store causing the four children to experience serious injuries. The driver of the car did not sustain severe injuries and was able to help with the injured children. Two of the children were taken to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison by MedFlight.

The town of Marcellon is heavily populated by the Amish community and horse-drawn buggies are noticed and respected on the road. Barry Road can cause perception difficulties due to large hills and blind spots.

All four children are said to be in stable condition as the investigation of the crash continues.
